Decarbonizing the High Seas: How Ammonia Engines and Rigid Sails Are Driving the Next Maritime Revolution

In a landmark transformation for commercial shipping, clean propulsion technologies are shifting from experimental trial runs to deep-sea deployment. Leading this wave is Belgian gas carrier operator EXMAR, which took delivery of the Antwerpen—the world's first ocean-going vessel engineered to burn zero-carbon ammonia fuel. Powered by Swiss engine designer WinGD's X52DF-A dual-fuel engine, the 46,000-cubic-meter gas carrier introduces liquid ammonia injection technology to eliminate sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter, and direct carbon emissions during sea passage.

Dual Decarbonization Pathways: While zero-carbon fuels like ammonia offer a long-term chemical replacement for heavy marine fuel oil, wind-assisted propulsion provides immediate mechanical efficiency. Tanker operator Union Maritime is deploying giant rigid sails called WindWings across its fleet, cutting annual fuel consumption and emissions by around 12% per ship.

The technical design of the WinGD X52DF-A engine utilizes a high-pressure liquid fuel supply system coupled with a small 5% pilot fuel injection to ensure stable ignition. Simultaneously, wind-assisted propulsion systems like BAR Technologies’ WindWings deploy automated, solid-steel sails that adjust their angle to harness offshore winds. By generating forward thrust alongside traditional engines, these rigid sails drastically reduce engine load and lower fuel costs without reducing vessel speed.
