In a major advancement for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Germany has deployed wireless inductive charging pads across 200 motorway rest stops along the Autobahn network. Embedded directly into parking bay surfaces, this technology allows compatible electric vehicles to charge automatically while drivers rest, dine, or use service facilities. By eliminating physical cables, plugs, and complex payment steps, the initiative marks a significant shift toward seamless, hands-free charging during long-distance motorway travel.
Eliminating Charging Friction: Traditional cable-based fast charging often involves physical handling of heavy high-voltage cords, connector compatibility issues, and parking slot blocking. Wireless inductive charging eliminates every operational hurdle: drivers simply park their vehicle over the embedded ground pad, step away, and return to an automatically recharged vehicle.
Deployed by Plugless Power and WiTricity under a Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridor agreement, the network operates on the SAE J2954 standard for 11 kW wireless power transfer. This power level adds roughly 70 kilometers of driving range during a standard 45-minute rest stop. The system detects when a compatible EV aligns over the pad, initiates the charging session automatically, and deactivates the electromagnetic field as soon as the vehicle departs.
