Contrary to common misconceptions framing SunZia as a hybrid wind-and-solar facility, the generation footprint relies exclusively on 916 high-capacity wind turbines. Designed to power roughly 1 million homes, the project routes fuel-free electricity directly to high-demand markets across Arizona and California.

Overcoming Transmission Bottlenecks: While generating renewable power is straightforward, transporting it across state lines remains one of the clean energy sector's greatest challenges. SunZia required nearly two decades of regulatory permitting, right-of-way approvals, and multi-agency reviews before breaking ground—underscoring how interstate transmission infrastructure represents the primary gating factor in modern power grid modernization.

According to reports from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and Reuters, SunZia’s operational wind capacity exceeds the total generation of the next two largest U.S. wind farms combined. By deploying Voltage Source Converter (VSC) HVDC technology, the transmission corridor transports electricity with minimal line-loss across long distances, injecting thousands of megawatts of night-time wind energy directly into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) grid.
